One of Reykjavík’s most striking landmarks is concert hall Harpa. Located down by the old harbour in the centre of Reykjavík it is a popular stop for travellers exploring the city as you can explore the building freely and the top floors offer some stunning views.
Harpa was designed by Danish Architects from the firm Henning Larsen in cooperation with Danish-Icelandic artist Ólafur Elíasson. Ólafur designed the distinctive coloured glass facade that you can see in the photo above. The facade is inspired by the basalt landscape of Iceland and is lit up creating beautiful patterns on the grand building.
Construction started in the year 2007 and the opening concert was on 4 May 2011. The Icelandic Symphony Orchestra performed under the baton of Vladimir Ashkenazy with the Icelandic pianist Víkingur Ólafsson as soloist.
